Project brief:
This 3BHK home designed for a young couple and their child is a cute little apartment in an upscale society. This apartment situated on the 7th floor gave us a canvas filled of light, which only beautifully added on to the aesthetic in which the home was designed. The clients knew they wanted a home that was majorly minimal in its demanor but also did not want the spaces to be grey and boring. They loved the idea of infusing some life into the design with the introduction of colors and we set out to do just that. We wanted the home to be clean, thoughtful and unpretentious, eclectic in a way that it embraces diverse colours and textures beautifully, yet seamlessly bringing together a sense of refinement and a cozy atmosphere.
As one walks into the living, its hard to miss that the living is a simplified space with a spirit that’s both relaxed and sophisticated. In terms of colour, materials and the furniture, we decided to go sober yet wit dignified aesthetic. We designed a modest couch, upholstered it in beige and it sits in front of the wall which has framed line art pieces. We intentionally hung the frames in a random pattern to bring in an informal vibe. A dainty floor lamp made of cane holds a perfect spot at one corner of the couch. We designed a cane and wicker arm chair to complete the seating setup and chose a pretty chequered fabric in monotones to layer the space with patterns. A round coffee table in black brings in the additional punch of colour and provides some much needed contrast. To bring the whole set up together we added another layer of simple geometrical pattern in the rug design we chose. It perfectly compliments the colour palette of the space as well. For the media cabinet, we chose the wood from the Oak family which brings in the same mood as that of the restricted, colour pallets.
On the other side of this living, we kept the design pared down, mainly functional in order to avoid any bulk in this compact living space. The clients needed a projector screen in this area and due to size constraints we could not get the same falling down from the ceiling. Hence we created a sleek pelmet which acts a part of the media unit design. A slick addition which plays together in the entire design.
At the other side of the living is the dining space. We wanted this space, along with the Kitchen, to be slightly more fun and unrestrained.
Going the eclectic way, we brought in some candid colours into the aesthetics here. We wanted the corner wall in the dining to be a feature that looks chic and exquisite. So we panelled the wall with simple trims till the chair rail, rounding the edge where the walls meet and swatched it with a rust tone. Above the chair we chose to do yet another monochromatic striped pattern that elevated the design beautifully. The dining table set up is another contrast story. We wanted to bring inhere the same informality seen in the lining wall art. We decided to do a mismatched set. A stark black classic circular dining table was paired with wooden chairs that were upholstered in tan. Adding in to the eclecticism, a minimal metal spokes pendant light in black was installed to complete this story.
The kitchen however is the highlight of the public spaces. With the living and dining done in earthy tones and a more sober aesthetic, we wanted to drive in a whimsical element that carried its own personality. When we floated this idea to the clients, they instantly loved it and we ended up having a gorgeous cornflower blue kitchen, rightly making a statement. White counter and backsplash balances the dose of colour effortlessly and hardware in black, accentuates the whole look.
The Master Bedroom revels in a restful aesthetic perfect for its propose. It is designed with an elegance and sophistication that is a right blend of high design and functional comfort. The bed wall extends into a study which has a dedicated wall feature made up of banana fibre that brings a purposeful visual distinction between the 2 zones. A very modest wood covered backpanel highlights the wall, which we detailed out with contrast black borders. This panel is layered with a cushioned headboard in blue grey structure in rectangular panels. The wooden night stand is customised with a circular base and a cylindrical bottom looking perfect for that space. The black wall lamp illuminates this zone. We designed a media cum display unit for the wall in front of the bed, which extends out into the closet. We designed it with neat, clean lines with a shaker style detail and the banana fibre making a show again. To being in a rich contrast, we chose to install black hardware and it takes the took a notch higher. Due to space constraint, we custom made a sliding door for the bathroom which slides onto the mirror, making use of every inch of space masterfully.
The kids playroom was a narrow compact room where we faced the challenge of making it versatile in order to use it as a study, a play den had to maximise storage. So while drafting the layout of this room, we decided to build everything on just one wall, leaving the other half of the room free, bringing in some breathing space and keeping it open for activities. We divided this part of the room into 2 halves again. One had the study with ample storage below and above, and the other was a play space. We kept the aesthetic of the room very. gender neutral and decided to play with only wood and white to bring in an openness
and make the space feel light. The study zone has a fair share of open and close storage and we added the bulletin board above the desk, finishing it in a delicate striped fabric. At the other side, we panelled both balls in warm wood, to make the space feel snug. Tailor made rock climbing holds were added atop this as a requirement. We wanted to finish these holds in pastels to avoid disrupting the sobriety of this gorgeous room. A cushion was added below this space for safety and we chose a beautiful plaid fabric in blue with pink lines complementing the wall feature seamlessly. The room also had tiny details to boast about which were tiny yet left an impact that is discerning. For example, the leather pulls at the study and the pompoms lining the curtain ends that were done in the exact same shade as the climbing holds.
The Guest Bedroom is anchored in its space saving sensibility yet fun in the way we designed it. A Murphy bed was a need for this room and we tucked in the same with an open shelving unit and loft above. This rendered the whole design to be seamless. On opening down the bed, a beautiful
ship lap panel is revealed which is done in a rose pink, that is also replicated in the closet-color. For the rest of the furniture, we chose a subtle grey to balance out this punch of colour. We also designed a freestanding closet for this room, detailed it with crown moulding and black hardware, to bring in the timeless design with a contemporary edge.
And hence we created a home that is rich with layered associations of eclectic styles, colours and functionality.
