Project Type : 3BHK + study
Project Area : 2450 sq. ft.
Project Location : Bangalore
This home borrows its style from the farmhouse aesthetic but with a sleeker spin on it. We have streamlined the designs to blend in modern with the farmhouse in this gorgeous 4BHK home. This 2450 sqft home that is designed for a young couple, their daughter, and visiting parents includes 3 bedrooms, the 4th converted into a study and is packed with character and a sense of warmth. Every space is injected with a relaxed spirit, where simple sophistication is well attained.
The house opens up into an entry vestibule, and with a long wall at our disposal we decided to make this count every bit to give a glimpse of what lay beyond. We designed half-and-half walls with the traditionalist shiplap treatment ending with a detailed chair rail. Then there was a tropical wallpaper with muted monochromes highlighting the upper half. This made up our perfect farmhouse-style entryway. A pulldown shoe cabinet with grey and wood serves functionally, above which the mirror not only conceals the MCB box but also adds to the aesthetic. We completed this setup with one wooden pouffe looking gorgeous in zebra-striped fabric making the space rightly utilitarian.
The home further opens up into the expanse of the living spaces where we divided it into 2 zones. A smaller secondary seating near the foyer and a complete seating arrangement with the media unit occupying the remaining half. Doing up the 1st zone with warm minimalism we peppered the wall with classic trims juxtaposed with fluted panels and painted them in sober greys. We kept things interesting here with our custom-made spindle back bench upholstered with the prettiest chequered fabric. The rich teak wood not only brings in the warmth but also the appeal of the farmhouse-style decor. The same warm vibe is extended into the 2nd zone where we built a gorgeous media cabinet that is made plush with teak and marble. We patterned out the teak veneer in grooves and shelves and it effortlessly brings so much personality to the space. Without going overboard we stuck to soothing contrasts of grey and green color choices for the upholstery. The super comfortable furniture evokes a paired-down relaxed style and low-key luxury. We kept it cool and stuck to the mantra of less is more with clean-lined and slick coffee and end tables to complete the setup.
Overlooking the living is the dining space which is our absolute favourite. Every piece of furniture and accessory comes together beautifully here without looking heavy-handed.
A fair bit of country style here works up its charms with french farmhouse-inspired crockery cabinetry. We played with levels in its design giving it ample storage and open space. A chic floral wallpaper adorns the insights of the glass cabinet and we styled the open space with a large mirror and farmhousy lamps that is perfect yet purposeful. The dining table arrangement steals the show. We tailor-made a classic marble top dining table and detailed it with carved teak wood legs that are reminiscent of the traditionalist farm style. We have kept the design of the chairs simple to balance the look perfectly but used alternating solid and patterned fabric for the upholstery to bring in the cool casual everyday glamorous and what adds the final highlight is the dramatically rustic chandeliers that hang atop the dining that brings in the fresh farmhouse feel.
The kitchen of the other end as provided by the builder was a walled-off area with hardly any natural light illuminating the space. We demolished the wall to facilitate an open kitchen that is now flooded with natural light. Sticking to a pleasant farmhouse aesthetic, we maintained a monotone grey kitchen, accentuated with black hardware. White quartz was made for a pristine countertop and we chose patterned monochrome tiles for the backsplash adding richly to the vibe. What stands out here is our breakfast counter. Though simple with just the countertop ending with curved edge detail, we introduced a spectacular wood-carved pedestal to support the counter on one end. The quirk it brings to the kitchen vibe is much needed. Lastly, we chose black metal breakfast chairs which match perfectly with the palette.
From these public spaces, a corridor leads into the private quarters of the home which opens up to the 4 rooms along both sides. The walls of this corridor are adorned with large framed family pictures, making the walk into the public spaces nostalgic.
The Master bedroom perfectly depicts the client’s personal style – simple, understated yet elegant. The bedroom starts with a foyer prelude and we wanted to dress up this wall with the color scheme that was envisioned for this room. Color blocking the wall, topping it up with tropical organic artwork in monochrome, and adding an inlay detailed shelf – we created an elevated first impression. At the bed zone, we conceptualized a layered headboard with rattan as the hind element and a gorgeous blue floral fabric upholstering the cushion. We added soft curve details in the design which brings in the country charm. The bed as well as the attached nightstand is worked up with similar curvy details. emphasis on the whole design we decided to outline the headboard in black and its intent beautifully. We also provisioned 2 black wall lamps on either side of the bed, to light up a mood. Considering the vastness of the room, we decided to give them a separate seating zone for those coffee times together. Plush armchairs in blue striped fabric bring in the joy of the modern farmhouse aesthetic. The end table between the armchairs is a clever addition to this arrangement. At the other side of the room, features a sideboard done with an aesthetic that matches the bed and is utilitarian.
Their daughter’s bedroom is pastel heaven. We closed in on a very pretty color palette consisting of powder blue and baby pink – her favorite colors but also designed a fashion that the room evolved with her as she grew up. Keeping things tantalizing we chose a very textured fabric for the classic camel back headboard which had a beautiful geometric pattern making a subtle statement. The bed and the nightstand were structured with ample storage for her growing needs. On either side of the headboard, there are wall lamps with off-white lampshades that dispelled a dreamy glow on the walls when lit. The other delicate yet exciting feature here is the ceiling treatment. Doing away with boring plain jane ceilings, we chose to do a blush pink floral wallpaper spanning the entire ceiling. Stopping at not only that, we brought the color of this wallpaper onto the walls in pretty scallops surrounding the cornice edge of the room. Right opposite the bed, we made dual functional furniture where the study extended out into a seating space for cozy reading times. We also provided a long-running ledge above the entire space, bringing back the scallops in the back panel and pretty wooden side rails.
The parent’s bedroom however is a little easy on colors and has the poignancy of Indian classical without being too dated. In fact, the room feels fresh, aligning to the character and warmth the farmhouse style brings. The headboard wall is in the limelight here. A uber gorgeous Indian motif print in the juiciest colors adorns the wall in the form of wallpaper.
The headboard to makes a statement with the wall-to-wall rattan and wood panel behind the bed. This room strikes just the right balance of pastoral and refined.
The study room doubles up as a multifunctional room with the pooja cabinet at the far end and, a study for 2 taking up the central space, a full-height bookcase, and lots of open floor space for the kids to play. The pooja cabinet is a blend of modern and Indian with the cabinet itself being sleek and clean-lined with just the shutters done in a classic jaali pattern calling out its purpose. Beside it is a tall storage that extends out into the study desk. The wall behind the desk is a gorgeous green chequered panel that is this room’s highlight. Wall lamps are installed to illuminate the desk space. To the right of the study is the massive bookcase that is a good combination of open and closed cabinets. Perfect for book, curios, and accessories alike.
This home is utilitarian and pleasing, emphasizing, comfortable, and casual living, of course with the contemporary sensibilities that are reflective of today’s times.
