This home – a 3BHK space, located in a high rise apartment in Bangalore, seamlessly blends modern aesthetics with the timeless allure of Balinese design principles. It is owned by a young couple, accompanied by their 1.5-year-old daughter.
We have named this home ‘Zephyr @ 17’. Zephyr means the gentle breeze that flows through the open spaces and here it symbolises our statement fluid wall that curves from the living indoors all the way to the balcony outdoor. The ‘@ 17’ not only denotes its elevated location but also symbolizes the connection between this tranquil space and the expansive skies, making it a true sanctuary above the city’s hustle and bustle.
At the very entrance of this home, we catch a glimpse of the design aesthetic that lies beyond. We breathed new life into the wooden door, crafting it with delicate arched grooves and accentuating it with a bespoke green marble handle. Upon crossing this threshold, we step into a foyer space. Here, a custom console takes the spotlight. We built bulbous legs to boldly assert its character and stained it in rich black to create a captivating contrast against the understated greige wall. The wall we see here is panelled out with a niche. We created this panel to hide the MCB that was housed in this wall. We then adorned this niche with a monochrome stencilled-leaf wallpaper, that completes the set up gorgeously.
As this exquisite console adorned the right wall of the foyer, an elongated corridor lay straight ahead. This corridor culminated at a powder room, with its door aligning with the main entrance. However, this arrangement lacked visual appeal, and we decided to turn this around in our design. In our quest to make the corridor walk more engaging, we divided the space into a sequence of arched sections, each meticulously detailed with grooves. To conceal the powder room door, we created a flush panel and adorned it with a tropical wallpaper. This dramatic makeover completely revitalized the space, elevating it gorgeously.
To the left of the foyer was a spacious living area, which we thoughtfully divided into two distinct zones – the primary living space, perfect for engaging in conversations, and the secondary living area, dedicated to the media unit.
In the primary living area, we curated a seating ensemble entirely crafted from rich teak. This comprised two sumptuous couches and a pair of comfortable armchairs. Embracing an eclectic design, we introduced cane as an accent, infusing a touch of warmth and texture into the arrangement. To complement the timeless and sturdy aesthetic, we commissioned custom center and end tables in solid teak. The center table exuded an organic charm with its live-edge trunk design, while the end tables showcased arched grooves, adding a delightful element. The choice of deep teal upholstery fabric for the seating was a deliberate decision to inject a vibrant burst of color into an otherwise muted space. However, the pièce de resistance in this living space is the breathtaking curtain wall that extends the full length of the space. Our endeavour to capture the fluidity of a gentle Balinese breeze led us to create this masterpiece. We molded curved shapes and layered them with gypsum to mirror the graceful flow of nature. And to add an extra layer of fascination, we carved an arched niche within this sweeping curve, which we lined with rich teak wood. Within this alcove, a world of treasures comes to life. An assortment of books, curios, and souvenirs from their travels find a home, each item whispering stories of adventure and joyous moments they shared along the way.
On the adjacent wall, we introduced a console – a bespoke creation designed to echo the lush tropical foliage found in Bali. Above this console, the wall comes to life with a carefully curated ensemble of six decor pieces. Together, they tell a vivid story of the mountains, the beach, and real sea shells, all evoking the essence of diverse landscapes and the beauty of nature.
Connected to this primary living area is a terrace balcony, designed to seamlessly extend the living space. We intentionally extended the curved wall from inside to outside, creating a harmonious transition between the two areas. To accentuate this continuity, we reimagined the balcony flooring using broken marble pieces, the same material used in the living space. To add to the whimsy, we introduced striking black and green marble elements to form a central motif on the balcony floor. Within this, a life-sized Plumeria plant thrives, lending an enchanting touch to the space. The balcony is also home to a teak bar cabinet, a thoughtful addition, particularly useful during gatherings and get-togethers.
At the other end of the room, we curated a more relaxed set up with a luxuriously comfortable couch facing a teak media console, designed to be both functional and visually appealing. It is adorned with an interesting 3D pattern, infusing it with a lot of character. The coffee table features a uniquely shaped top and asymmetrical legs that balances the tabletop perfectly. To enhance the room’s natural beauty, we added a life-sized plant on one end and a set of reclaimed live-edged wood that housed mirrors.
Continuing from the foyer, we designed a small yet open pooja space. In keeping with the Bali-inspired theme, we opted for a stone-textured finish in a serene slate color, complemented by warm wood elements. The focal point of this sacred corner is the tile backdrop adorned within classic arched layers, featuring a timeless floral motif pattern. This pooja space, while maintaining its simplicity, exudes a sense of style and harmony. Adding to its visual allure, a jute light fixture casts a warm and inviting glow, making it the picture-perfect setting.
Directly opposite the pooja space, is the dining area, where an expansive table comfortably seats eight. With unconventional flair, we opted for a striking contrast in the dining set. We chose the slate colour for the dining table and in a harmonious juxtaposition, customised wood and wicker dining chairs to pair with it, creating a beautiful blend of textures. This dining area comes alive with the warm glow of large wicker pendants, grouped in a trio. The backdrop wall is designed keeping in with the theme of contrasts. One-third of the wall is elegantly paneled with veneer, checkered with detailed teak trims. The remainder of the wall is adorned in texture paint, highlighted at its center with a hand-painted line art mural. This space turned out to be whimsical with all the elements contributing perfectly.
Adjoining the dining area lies the open kitchen, and both the spaces are divided by a generously sized working counter. This counter not only expanded the available counter space for meal preparations but also significantly augmented storage capacity with the additional cabinetry beneath it. In our design approach for the kitchen, functionality was paramount, and we aimed for a clean and minimal aesthetic. We achieved this by opting for a dual-toned kitchen, with taupe tones dominating the cabinetry, elegantly punctuated by wood-textured elements. To add character, we designed the backsplash unconventionally. Contrast tile colors were combined to line the kitchen wall, where the rich, deep olive-colored tiles introduced a subtle hint of color to the otherwise understated kitchen space.
Moving along the corridor, the first room was designed for guests, embracing a warm minimalistic style and had elements that added personality to the space. The headboard wall was painted in a soothing terracotta hue, creating a restful ambiance within. We fashioned a custom headboard, layered with dual upholstery fabrics and adorned it with curves that lent an offbeat charm. One of the fabrics featured a delicate geometric print, complemented by another fabric that mirrored the terracotta wall color. On each side of the bed, circular nightstands stood in perfect harmony. To add a touch of accent lighting, we introduced table lamps, each with an organic-shaped concrete base paired with elegant off-white shades, elevating the overall ambiance. Opposite the bed, a chest of drawers was designed to offer additional storage. We chose to finish it in a bold and striking black hue, and further enhanced its allure with jaali cut patterns. Adjacent to this was the dressing mirror and we transformed this into an art piece by collaborating with an artist, who hand-painted the mirror frame in a classic black and white palette, showcasing sharp geometric patterns.
For the next room, we embarked on a delightful project – creating the perfect bedroom for their growing toddler. We set out to craft a space that would be fun, vibrant, and reflect her favorite colors. We started with the mood-boarding, keeping in mind the jungle theme wallpaper, a special request from our little client. We went the extra mile by customizing this wallpaper with a textured finish, ensuring her tactile senses were fully engaged. Another showstopper was a bed shaped like a hut, positioned in front of the wallpaper, making her sleeping space equally captivating. By placing the bed against the wall, we maximized the available floor space for her play. The wardrobes were designed in a combination of pristine white with an enchanting blue at the lower end, featuring fluted designs. We customized the wardrobe handles in the shape of buttons, adding a playful touch. A full-sized window ran perpendicular to the wardrobes and for the window treatment we customised sheers that were designed with an ombre effect, transitioning from blue at the base to white at the top, mirroring the wardrobe’s colours gorgeously. And below this window, we created a cozy window seat, that became an ideal nook for her reading and playtime. On the opposite side of the room, we harnessed the full wall length as a canvas for creativity and functionality. We color-blocked half of the wall with a delightful shade of green and designed hut-shaped panels. These panels housed marker board and chalkboard laminates, allowing her to freely explore her artistic side. At the other end, a gorgeous scalloped-framed mirror was integrated, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes.
The master bedroom in this home is a serene sanctuary, bathed in natural light pouring in through its generously sized windows. This room effortlessly channels the tranquil essence of Bali right within the home. To complete the holistic design, we chose to revamp the flooring with a cement micro-topping, bestowing the space with a raw and rustic aesthetic. Rather than introducing a traditional floor rug, we opted for patterns with marble inlays, creating a visually minimal yet utterly enchanting flooring detail that added to the room’s allure. The bed and nightstands were finished in warm teak veneer, showcasing subtle groove details that enhanced their visual appeal. One side of the bed featured closets adorned in a combination of teak and banana fiber, elevating the Bali-inspired ambiance. On the opposite side, a window was transformed into a cozy window seat, offering a quiet reading nook. Facing the bed, the room extended into a study area that seamlessly integrated with a media unit. This unit was beautifully detailed with grooves, mirroring the intricate design of the nightstands, achieving a harmonious flow of design throughout the space.
