This home is a grand style home – grand in its history and heritage, grand in its back story, and ofcourse grand in the way it’s designed.
The home that stood on this site was an ancestral home of the clients. And while they believed that it always brought them great luck, it needed a massive makeover. The entire building was reimagined with a completely new layout and facade. However, to make the new home still feel relevant to old times, the clients longed for a traditional Indian inspired aesthetic to guide the design of this home.
This home boasts of high ceilings, open spaces and an energy that is joyful and spirited. The designs showcase an interplay of forms, textures, patterns and colours that are a great amalgamation of character and culture.
The storytelling of this home starts right at the main door. It emulates the magnificence of the personality of the client, a perfect prelude to the grandiose of what lies beyond.
Its unconventional choice of staining it steel blue makes it a stunner. No passerby would miss it – guaranteed.
The doors open up into an exclusive foyer.
A beautiful motif pattern adorns the floor where a grey sandstone base is inlaid with the local hero – the black Cudappa stone and to bring in a vibrant pop an unconventional choice of Jaisalmer yellow stone was introduced.
We wanted a vintage console to anchor the space and sourced a teak beauty from Kochi that makes a statement.
The foyer opens to the most impactful space of the home – the courtyard.
Hunting down pillars that matched the majestic height of this home turned into a bit of an adventure. But we managed to procure the perfect pieces straight from the cultural heart of Kochi.
Stealing the spotlight however is a breathtaking, mesmerising, life-size marble sculpture of Lord Shiva and family. Weighing in at a colossal 1500kg, it took an entire village rallying together to put it into its place.
In the living and dining areas, the floor stands out with a checkered pattern featuring black cuddapah and grey limestone.
These spaces showcase rich craftsmanship of woodwork and hand painted details on the dining pendant lights and the vintage crockery cabinetry.
The statement wood carved pillar-legs of the dining match up to the regality of the home. And so does the media unit in the living – it features a wooden jaali that adds to the drama.
Intricacy of details is visible in every corner. The coffered ceiling detail in the living room effortlessly complements the cabinet design, giving the space a cohesive look.
The kitchen sits in a corner of the house. It is a compact space but laid out in a way that is absolutely ergonomic. We went for a dual tone combination in the kitchen – a classic wood and white. The details here however were made simpler, to ease maintainability. The counter top was a cool white too but we added a pop of colour with the backsplash tiles. We chose a beautiful blue grey terrazzo tile to be the hero here.
The room on the lower level is the grandparents room. We wanted this room to shine through as a true vintage beauty. And in order to do so, we chose a pattern on pattern approach. Bespoke cement tiles, a stunning floral fabric at the headboard panel and striking furniture designs create a look thats nothing like ordinary.
The entire room is accentuated with a gorgeous maroon tone that compliments the teak wood furniture beautifully.
The bathroom of this room is a vibrant, patterned space. We chose a motif patterned tile to line the floor and half wall and accentuated the other half with a solid coloured tile of a colour that was picked from the pattern. The final look was interesting and pretty and vintage.
The layout gifted us a grand staircase and we took this opportunity to create a visual masterpiece. We crafted intricately detailed balusters, turning heads with an unconventional touch – the rich steel blue, that made a show at the main door and in the courtyard tiles.
To elevate the look further, we teak lined the larger staircase wall, embedded mirrors in the panel and bordered them with wood carved trims, to exude a regal splendour.
The master bedroom unfolds as a captivating story within itself. Given the abundance of space, we transformed it into a suite-like haven by sectioning areas with a striking flooring combo, featuring green cement tiles and wooden textured tiles.
Taking center stage is a massive four-poster bed, designed to harmonize with the room’s generous dimensions. Custom-made furniture pieces, including the chest of drawers with brass inlays and a mammoth-sized bar cabinet, contribute to the regal ambiance we aimed for.
To balance the grandeur, we infused a touch of softness with delicate upholstery fabrics, chosen thoughtfully, quietly enhancing the room’s charm.
The master bathroom was conceptualised with 2 materials – marble and granite . The white and black gave it a classic monotone appeal which looked luxurious and elegant. We did the floors in black granite and for the walls we customised a pattern with the marble and granite to create repetitive patterns throughout. Brass shines through in the gorgeous vintage mirror and pendant light fixture and other fittings in the bathroom.
In this bedroom, where length is its defining feature, we played the space intelligently. Vintage pillars were strategically placed – to break its span, and create a subtle division between the bed space and the seating zone.
Unlike the other vibrant spaces in the home, this room adopts a soft and subtle palette. White dominates the furniture with the only colour being a hint of blush and blue in the flooring tiles and the upholstery. To ensure that the room did not look sterile, we added the warmth of the wood in a few furniture pieces.
Very intricate details like the false ceiling cornice and the closet mirror were added, to make the room feel luxurious.
The bathroom too sported a delicate colour palette with a white and black patterned tile adorning the floor and the walls were done in a muted blush and white. What however stands out here is an exotic pink stone that we chose for the countertop – which makes a pretty statement in this bathroom.
The office space is marked with extravagance with its luxurious black and white marble patterned flooring and statement furniture pieces. It exudes a vibe that fits the persona of man of the home. Furniture pieces were customised and upholstered in rich leathers and velvets that added to the opulence. A massive coffee table made in marble with brass inlays holds the space together while smaller black end tables add to the functionality. Ceiling high curtains further add to the magnificence.
This home recreates the old-world bungalow vibe and this is truly the essence of the home, and this is truly the experience of this home.
